Full Day Kindergarten
KINDERGARTEN FOCUSES ON PLAY-BASED LEARNING, DISCOVERY AND GROWS A LOVE TO LEARN THROUGH BUILDING MATHEMATICAL, CREATIVE AND LINGUISTIC FOUNDATIONS. KINDERGARTEN IS A WONDERFUL WAY FOR YOUR CHILD TO DISCOVER WHAT SCHOOL IS LIKE AND TO HAVE FUN WHILE LEARNING NEW THINGS.
Our Kindergarten Curriculum follows the Alberta Education Curriculum as laid out by the Government of Alberta. The New Alberta Curriculum Consists of Seven Integrated Discipline: Early Literacy, Citizenship and Identity, Personal and Social Responsibility, Environment and Community Awareness, Physical Skills and Well-Being and Creative Expression.
EARLY LITERACY (LANGUAGE ARTS)
A is for apple. Your child will begin to understand that letters have sounds and that together those sounds form words and carry meaning. They will have fun sharing their ideas and experiences, forming letters, printing their names and playing with the new words they learn. Language is the doorway to being able to share ideas and experiences, relate to others and make sense of the world. Your child will ask questions, give their thoughts on stories they hear and share their own exciting stories and experiences. They will read and print their name, group objects and play with words. As they discover how language works, the world opens up for them!
EARLY NUMERACY (MATHEMATICS)
Learning numbers and solving problems with patterns. Your child will represent and describe quantities of things up to 10. They will understand and create repeating patterns and compare objects based on their attributes. They will solve problems involving numbers, patterns and objects, and connect numbers to their everyday life.

ENVIRONMENT AND COMMUNITY AWARENESS (SCIENCE)
What do I see, smell and hear in my community? How do I shape the environment? Kindergarten children explore materials, build structures and use technology to explore, investigate and describe their world. They see similarities and differences and become aware of how one action can cause something else.
Your child will begin to make sense of the environment and understand how they fit into and shape their world. They will see similarities and differences between things and discover how one action can cause another. Using their senses, they will identify shapes, symbols and sounds; recognize animals; and see seasonal changes. Building structures with various materials, and using technology, they will impact the environment and see the results.
CITIZENSHIP AND IDENTITY (SOCIAL STUDIES)
I am unique and I belong! Your child will develop a strong sense of identity, self-esteem and belonging by exploring their environment and sharing stories. They will see themselves as unique and discover the connections they have with others. Kindergarten children explore who they are and how they fit into the world. Your child will become aware of their own uniqueness—their gifts, talents and interests—and discover the connections they have with others. They will develop a strong sense of identity, self-esteem and belonging as they share their gifts with others, express interest in others and interact sensitively and responsibly.
PERSONAL AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY (SOCIAL STUDIES)
I know how to act and how to work and play with others. Kindergarten children develop ways to express their feelings positively and to show respect and care for others. Trying new things and taking risks give them confidence in their ability to learn so they take responsibility for completing activities.
As your child makes friends, shares materials and attention, and takes turns, they will develop social skills they need for life. Kindergarten helps children see themselves as capable of learning, trying new things and taking risks. Rules and routines are learned and children become more independent, beginning to take responsibility for what they do at school. They develop ways to express feelings positively and to show respect and caring for others.
PHYSICAL SKILLS AND WELL-BEING (HEALTH AND PHYS. ED.)
A healthy body is part of a healthy life. Your child will begin to develop a love for physical activity through movement, games and activities. They will use a variety of equipment and see that they have the power to make healthy food choices and play safely.
Healthy lifestyles begin in Kindergarten. Through movement, games and activities that use a variety of equipment, children develop coordination, balance and stability, as well as fine motor skills. They begin to connect the choices they make—what they eat, whether they will follow safety rules—with their health and well-being, and begin to understand that they are responsible for their bodies.
CREATIVE EXPRESSION (ART)
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder! Drama, art, music and dance give your child ways to express their ideas and feelings, to bring their imagination to life and to see their creativity in a variety of forms. Your child will respond to objects and art, explore music and dance, and develop confidence through drama.
Ideas and feelings are shared in many ways. Kindergarten children explore drama, art, music and dance to express themselves and to shape the world with their vibrant imaginations. By listening to, creating and moving to music; looking at, creating and responding to visual art; and pretending to be someone else in a dramatic play, your child will become more self-aware and self-confident and begin to appreciate the connections that the fine arts create between individuals and the world.
